Colin's birthday, pt. 2

We've also never been bowling, so we thought that would be something special for Colin's birthday party.

Ben teaching the kids the ropes of bowling

Colin kept saying, "I'm 4 years old now, I can do all things myself."

So excited to be bowling by himself...daddy trying to help...
Eli was equally excited about Colin's birthday because he knew the toys would be just as fun for him.  He wore this cape the entire evening.

Bowling was so much fun!
We came home and had dessert.  Colin loves M&M's, so I made M&M cookie bars and wrote a 4 with whipped cream.

Then it was time to play and get ready to look at the stars.

We let the kids stay up late so they could see the stars and it was so fun to see their excitement.

The first few days of 4 have already brought a whole new spunk, but I'm looking forward to seeing what this year brings in Colin's life.

Happy Birthday Colin William! pt. 1

Colin is 4!

I had cinnamon rolls all ready to go for our early morning party and Alison and Eli waited so patiently for Colin to wake up.

Colin collapsed on the floor when I tried to take a picture of breakfast

I'll give an update on Maya later, but you can see she's was still looking pretty rough the morning of Colin's birthday.  I kept food and water by her at all times because she was too weak to get up and walk over to her food spot.  I was thankful to be taking care of her and not mourning the loss of her on Colin's birthday...and she's doing much better today, but that's for later.

We had planned to go to the camel farm with our friends, the White's, but it was closed when we got there.  Colin was disappointed, but we played at Castle Park for a little bit with our friends to make up for it.

Tolson and Colin
We spent the afternoon taking care of Maya and playing.  The boys made up some game that involved running around the house with Lego guns.

The first thing Colin said when he got up was, "Where's my birthday shirt?".   Alison asked if she could make his shirt and he LOVED it.  After lunch, they all decorated a shirt for fun.

Eli's pictures are never just a picture; they are always a story and it's always an adventure what you're going to hear.

I gave Maya a bath and Colin wanted a bath too.

When daddy got home, it was time to party!

Every time we go the library, Colin asks if I will please buy him a telescope (they have some by the kid's books).  One thing I love about Arizona is being able to see the stars so clearly just from our backyard and stargazing is something we definitely want to do with our kids.

Alison very thoughtfully, bought Colin walkie talkies.

He also got an astronaut helmet, a building set and superhero costumes.

The party was just starting, so stay tuned.

Some very hard days

Ironic timing.  I haven't had to post about some hard days since 4 years ago (minus a few stressful days during deployment).  We've had some good solid years of cheery posts, so I suppose it was time for life to hit.

We came home from church yesterday and the kids ran to the backyard to let Maya in, like they always do...it's always a "fight" who gets to let her in.  We all stood in the backyard, calling her name and she wasn't coming.  She was gone.  It just didn't make sense.  She's too big to get through the gate, too short to jump the cement wall and there were no signs of digging or attempt to get out.  Ben thoroughly checked the backyard to make sure she hadn't, well to put it bluntly, died under a bush.  I guess a mamma bear came out in me and I just took off walking the neighborhood, without saying a word to Ben or picking up my phone or even switching into different shoes.  When I finally realized that it would be more effective to drive the neighborhood, I headed home and Ben and Alison went out on bikes.  We searched for Maya all day.  Ben rode 16 miles on his bike.  We made phone calls, put up fliers, posted pictures online.  Our neighbor came over in the evening to invite us over to swim (which we have been dying for them to do!) but Ben said he wasn't sure we could because we were in the middle of searching for our puppy.  The neighbor informed us that he saw a yard company truck in front of our house that morning, but hadn't heard any barking.  Ben quickly emailed our rental company and was able to confirm that a company came to our house that morning (without us knowing) to fix a sprinkler, they let Maya out and essentially chased her away in efforts to "catch" her.  These men have previously been to our house and know we have a puppy and know that she is afraid of strangers...especially men.  The thing that was really hard to swallow is that they didn't contact us or animal control.   They just left and left us to worry and search aimlessly for our dog.

We did end up going for a quick swim and somehow we got some sleep last night, with only the assurance that she's microchipped and the animal control will bring her straight to our house when they find her.  I was up before 6 this morning and got a tip that someone saw her running a few miles from our house.  So I jumped in the car and drove around for an hour.  I came home to pick up the kids and breakfast and we essentially spent the morning in the car (Alison even did school while we drove).  It was completely disheartening to know she was out there and we couldn't find her.  Her color was against me because she blended in with everything; the houses and the landscape.

So note to self: if you live in the desert, buy a BLACK dog!

I was a mess.  Thankful it was not one of my children missing, but it still kinda felt like it.  Somehow Alison was calm through it and kept gently saying, "It's okay, momma.  We'll find her."  I didn't have the heart to tell her the hard core truth.  Time was ticking.  A puppy in the desert, without food or water or shelter, for much longer wouldn't make it.

Alison had her first basketball practice tonight and Ben and I sat and talked about what to do.  The absolute worse case scenario was what we were in; not knowing what happened to her.  If she was gone, we didn't have closure and sure didn't know what to tell the kids.

P.S.  Alison is the tallest and only girl on her team.  I told her that makes her the team star.

After practice, Ben said we'd drive around a little more on the way home.  We were both feeling helpless by this point and this was our last ditch effort.

And I can only say that it was God.
Ben turned down a road I had been on a million times today and asked if I had tried this neighborhood and I said, "Yes, but that doesn't mean I didn't miss her" and as he turned into the neighborhood, my eye caught a glimpse of something in the sand.  I shouted for Ben to stop the car and jumped out.  Maya was laying on the side of the road, at the entrance of another neighborhood.  She could barely move and was just a puddle of dehydrated, bones showing, puppy.  We had a bowl in the car that Ben ran over and she drank 2 bottles of water in less than a minute.
We got her home and it took awhile for my emotions to calm down.  I am still worried about her and still angry at the lawn people.  Her feet are beaten up and she's limping, we're hoping is just from running for almost 2 days.  She's eaten, drank and peed and resting now, which we are taking as positives, but we have no idea what happened to her or what she went through while she was gone.  We are almost positive though, that if we had not found her tonight, she would not have made it to morning.

I am SO thankful to be posting pictures of this dog.  I was preparing to end this post with really sad news.  I have now rescued this dog twice from death...hoping to never have to do it again.

We all took turns sitting with her.  She didn't want to be alone, but was too weak to walk to us.

Colin William turns 4 in 2.5 hours and I will be celebrating extra hard this year.  Celebrating for the hard days and the awesome days.  For the days full of tears and the days full of laughter.

Praise the Lord for our family being back together!

Adjusting to summer

It only took 115 degrees to get Ben Shear inside.  We ran next to each other at the Y and dreamed of being back on our favorite *cooler* trail.  Even inside the Y gets very hot and we always wonder why they haven't put fans in there!

We've been given some great advice about surviving an Arizona summer and this week we put them to practice.  I turned our schedule on it's head...first thing in the morning, we are outside playing.  Then we get any errands done or go to the library or the Y (i.e. do anything that requires getting in the car).  We're home by lunch and do school in the afternoon.

Seems like an easy transition, but we're all so used to being home in the morning and going out in the afternoon, that it made the week a little funky.  The first day, Alison was almost in tears "why are we outside playing?!  It's only 8 am!"...true, it was early, but it was only 90 and we played soccer together and she warmed up to the idea.

One of our errands this week was to the Dollar Store.  Eli was dying to spend his tooth fairy money and was hilarious in this store.  "You mean I can buy anything in this store?!"  Alison and Colin each had $2.00 as well, but Eli won the prize for stretching his money.  Alison bought a stuffed bear and a floaty ring for the pool.  Colin bought a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup and Eli bought a package of 3 cars and a package of 4 ring pops.

We drive by a McDonald's often with a big "$0.69 ICE CREAM" sign and the kids always ask if we can go and I always say no.  This week, I finally said yes and they each got a cone and then played on their massive inside play place.  I think this may be a spot we come back to often, just to have a fun, air conditioned, place to play.

Colin took one lick of his ice cream and was done, so Eli ate both of theirs.

Another adjustment the last few weeks has been to the water...it doesn't get cold!  If you get a drink, you have to put ice in it.  When I've wanted a cooler shower after a workout, it doesn't matter where I put the temperature gauge, it's all the same temperature; not cool.

Our last summer adjustment this week was that the neighbor kids are out of school.  Every day, at 2:00, we've had a little knock on our door and Alison has been so excited to have friends so close by to play with.  It definitely has motivated her to get her school work done by then so she can play and I've been working on accepting the chaos that comes with extra kids running around.

This and that

$30 at Walmart well spent:

10 foot blow up pool and 3 squirt guns=a little place to cool off on these crazy hot days.

The kids have loved having some backyard fun, but after a day will complain that the water is too cold.  Arizona sure has me baffled.

I was hesitant to buy a blow up pool with having a puppy that could pop it, but then I remembered that our dog is scared of water and won't go close to it.

She sits in the shade with me and if Eli jumps out of the pool, she'll chase him around the yard (something about his goggles makes her nuts).

Maya is doing really well.  She still has an occasional accident (I wouldn't want to pee outside when it's 115 either) but has been warming up to new people much better and is getting more comfortable in her doggy skin every day.  She sleeps in a crate in our room, but will often lay somewhere near me while I watch a show in bed in the evenings.  I don't hate having this cute view for the evening...

Eli has been working hard on learning chess.  Ben put on a kids chess app for the iPad that teaches them/makes it fun to learn.  He will often play on that app, but most of all, is convinced that he is the best because he beat Grandpa at Fun City when we were Kansas.  So Ben took his initiative and has been playing with him, teaching him the real ropes of chess.

I guess I should add that Ben is an avid chess player and the boys see him play and I love it that they want to be just like daddy.  Hopefully they will also be great cooks and musicians.

Our kids love art, way more than they should for how much effort I put into supplying them with art-y things.  The boys will often ask to color during school (which I always say yes to because I know that if they were in public school there would be a whole lot of coloring going on) and were asking a lot to paint.  Somehow all of our paint brushes got lost in the move.  New paint and brushes meant hours of painting for these two...in pj's, of course.

Summer arrived here this week and I won't lie, I'm a little scared.  This heat is something I've never experienced.  Hot, I can handle.  This heat hurts...literally.  I went out yesterday in 115 degrees.  I was surprised and relieved to see people out and about, but when I stepped out of the car, it felt like my skin was on fire.  I understand now why people wear long sleeves in this kind of heat because the sun is so strong that it hurts your skin.  I actually think I'm going to look into a lightweight shirt we can wear when we have to go out...and hats..and maybe we just won't leave the house.

Mom's 60th Birthday

I invited mom to Arizona for her birthday and then schemed with Beth to surprise her.  Beth and Katherine flew in just a few hours before mom and we surprised her at the airport...I also got a good surprise when I found her talking with the dentist that I had a horrible experience with and thus cancelled all our appointments with...awkward.

So we had three days together to have some fun in the Arizona sun.

We took them to Arizona donuts for brunch (aka so we can get both burritos and donuts).

The kids had a tea party:

And we tried out the public pool:

The pools here make no sense, whatsoever.  The pools are only open a couple of hours, a couple of days a week.

Even weirder, is the kids are freezing after 10 minutes.

Of course they came to visit on our first week of triple digit temperatures.  I was just praying that they didn't melt away!

We left the kiddos and my mom in the air conditioning and took Beth to our favorite taco truck.  We asked Ben to take our picture and he started snapping lots of pictures and I was saying, "Wait, I have cilantro in my teeth!" and we were laughing at how ridiculous this picture was going to be.

And if you don't believe we're sisters, we both have the one squinty eye thing when we smile...

We had an abundance of Mexican food and took mom out the next day for lunch.

We had a little party for mom after lunch, complete with brownies that the candles melted into!

This sweet little boy.  He sat quietly during the party and when things died down, he asked if Grandma was done opening presents.  I thought he just wanted to be excused to go play, but he grabbed a card he made and had hidden in the kitchen cabinet and gave it to Grandma.  His card said, "Happy Birthday Grandma, love Eli.  I hope you like your birthday."

He has just started trying to write independently, so his words are spelled how they sound in his head and it's a hoot to see.  I love it.

Just to leave you laughing and keep things real...
Ben was taking pictures and apparently his new thing is snapping a bazzillion pictures in a row and this was my reaction:
