Grammar with my very literal son

Eli has started diagramming sentences and doing an amazing job.

Today he was working on state of being verbs.  The lesson instructions were for me to read the first sentence and he was to read the second one, to give him an understanding how the verbs worked.

Me reading: Are you in the car?

He is supposed to read: I am.

Eli: I am not.

Me: Eli, just read the sentence.

Eli: But I am not in a car.

Me: I know you are not in a car, just pretend.

Eli:  Why would I pretend to be in a car?

Me: Okay, fine.  Are you in the school room?

Eli: I am.
