Lighthouse adventure

We drove up the Outer Banks to visit this lighthouse.

The kids were excited to climb to the top.  Alison practically skipped up and Colin was pretty confident he could keep up with her.  Eliot, on the other hand, had the ambition, but quickly became scared.

Halfway up; Eli clinging to the wall and me trying to keep Colin contained...they are complete opposites.

We finally made it to the top!  It was a little scary being so far up, but the view was definitely worth it.

Ben took this shot as we headed back down:

I kept thinking about the people who had job of lighting the lighthouse every day and who's life consisted of climbing up and down this tower.  Clearly they were in good shape and not prone to dizziness.

After a quick stop at the lighthouse store, we went to find some good sea food.  For some reason, we've started a tradition of eating at restaurants attached to gas stations.  It must be the thing down there, but the atmosphere is always surprisingly nice and the food excellent.  Colin thought their butter was the most delicious and was eating it straight out of the container.  If he wasn't such a peanut, I would have stopped him.  But we figured he needed the fat, so why not.

We were having a fabulous time at our "nice" dinner when all of the sudden Alison said she didn't feel good.  When Alison says this, I know something really bad is about to happen.  I rushed her to the bathroom and she did not look good at all.  She quickly became white and was slightly shaky.  After a couple of minutes, she said she thought she would be okay and we went back to the table.  Ben quickly put the pieces together and realized that she must be having a reaction to the shellfish.  We were all sharing our food, which included lobster bisque, shrimp, crab cakes and scallops.  She's had it before and usually loves it, but this particular night she asked for chicken fingers instead.  Anyway, she started breaking out in hives and said her throat felt funny.  We left our "nice" dinner half eaten and rushed to get some Benedryl.  It didn't take long for her to start feeling better, but we headed home anyway.  I've never seen her like that before and I was freaked out and wanted to be home in case something else needed to be done.  Thus, our unplugged weekend was cut short and next year we'll know not to give Alison the gamete of sea food :)

Really glad you guys figured out what was going with Alison. That's scary stuff :( Might want to think about getting an Epi pen for her; sometimes fries are cooked in the same oil as seafood at restaurants. But you probably already thought of that.
